NSW Police Minister resigns over ICAC probe into Liberal Party donations

New South Wales Police Minister Mike Gallacher has resigned after being named in the latest Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) inquiry.

NSW Premier Mike Baird accepted Mr Gallacher's resignation this afternoon, saying it would constitute an "unacceptable distraction" for the Government.

The ICAC has heard claims that Mr Gallacher and former energy minister Chris Hartcher hatched a plot to hide donations from a development company controlled by mining magnate Nathan Tinkler to an alleged Liberal party slush fund.

The payments were allegedly made by Mr Tinkler's horse stud to the fund, to conceal the involvement of banned donors.

The development comes as Premier Mike Baird tries to get on the front foot against corruption.

There is now the real prospect that NSW could become the first jurisdiction in Australia to prohibit or at least apply an enforceable constraint on party political donations.

Ramsay Health Care founder leaves billions to charity in will

Paul Ramsay has donated to charity the bulk of his $3.3 billion stake in the private hospital company he founded.

Mr Ramsay died overnight in his home town of Bowral after recently suffering a heart attack - he had originally been admitted to a hospital in Europe last week in a serious condition.

Mr Ramsay owned 36.2 per cent of the company, which has a market value of $9.03 billion.

Given the size of Mr Ramsay's holding in the company bearing his name, its board has informed the share market that his executors have notified it that "the vast majority" of his controlling shareholding will benefit the trust, with most of it being retained on trust for the Paul Ramsay Foundation.
