Labor demands Abbott explain cancellation of Indonesia trip

Labor is demanding Prime Minister Tony Abbott explain why he has abruptly cancelled a trip to Indonesia amid reports an asylum seeker operation is underway.

The Indonesian president invited Mr Abbott to a conference in Bali early next week but yesterday Mr Abbott's office released a statement saying he was "unable" to attend.

The Opposition's Tanya Plibersek says Australians deserve to know why Mr Abbott is "putting further pressure on the relationship" with Indonesia.

Nyrstar smelter transformation getting SA Government guarantee

An agreement on a $385 million transformation of the Port Pirie lead smelter looks to be almost finalised, with operator Nyrstar confirming the South Australian Government will underwrite the project.

The current smelter is to be turned into a multi-metal recycling facility and a big environment improvement is expected for the regional city.

Belgian owner Nyrstar now has confirmed the redevelopment will go ahead once the funding package with Premier Jay Weatherill is finalised.
