Life in jail for burglar who bashed baby to death

A man who bludgeoned a baby to death in his cot after breaking into the child's Bendigo home has been jailed for life.

A Victorian Supreme Court judge today sentenced Harley Hicks to minimum of 32 years in prison for the bashing murder of 10-month-old Zayden Veal-Whitting during a burglary in 2012.

In April, a jury found Hicks, 21, guilty of murdering Veal-Whitting after breaking into his family's Long Gully house in the middle of the night and hitting him repeatedly with a homemade baton.

In sentencing Hicks, Justice Stephen Kaye described the murder as "appallingly violent" and "utterly evil".
