D-Day 70th anniversary ceremonies underway in northern France

Commemorations to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings have begun in northern France, with a candlelit vigil at a key bridge seized by allied airborne troops at the start of the assault.

The midnight (local time) vigil at Pegasus Bridge marked the exact moment glider-borne British paratroopers landed in Normandy to capture key areas behind the invasion beaches.

Queen Elizabeth II and heads of state and government, including Prime Minister Tony Abbott, will join hundreds of veterans of the campaign in paying tribute to the thousands of soldiers, sailors, and airmen who died capturing the beaches of Normandy from the Germans.

Councils to keep GFC compensation after Federal Court ruling

Local councils have scored another comprehensive win against financial institutions that sold them investments which collapsed in the GFC.

The full bench of the Federal Court has upheld a ruling that the councils are entitled to compensation for being misled when they were sold financial products with the safest AAA credit rating, which turned out to be highly risky investments.

The ruling comes after ABN Amro Bank, Standard & Poors' and Local Government Financial Services (LGFS) appealed a judgment by a single judge of the Federal Court which awarded 13 New South Wales councils around $30 million in compensation for their financial losses.
