Turnbull's response to Bolt too heavy: Bernardi

Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi has criticised Malcolm Turnbull's response to conservative columnist Andrew Bolt as "unwise", "inappropriate" and "too strident".

Mr Turnbull said a piece in which Bolt accused him of courting Clive Palmer ahead of launching a possible bid for the Liberal leadership was "unhinged", "crazy", and bordering on the "demented".

In Question Time on Monday the Prime Minister was asked to choose between his "friend Andrew Bolt" and his "frenemy Malcolm Turnbull".

Meanwhile, Bolt has told 7.30 Mr Turnbull's "nasty" attack on him is part of a campaign to destabilise the PM.
