US, NATO condemn Russia's 'destabilisation' attempts in Ukraine

The United States is urging Russia to stop its "extremely dangerous and provocative" attempts to destabilise Ukraine, where tensions have soared in the past 24 hours.

The warning comes hours after Ukraine said its forces attacked and partly destroyed a Russian armoured column that entered its territory.

Mining giant BHP to split, spin off assets

BHP Billiton has confirmed that it will split the company and spin off its second tier assets into a new corporation.

It is expected to reveal the full details of the plan when it releases its full year results on Tuesday but speculation today is that the new company will be headquartered in Perth with a mixture of the company’s South African and Australian nickel, manganese and aluminium assets.
