US air strikes help Kurdish bid to retake Mosul dam

Kurdish troops backed by US warplanes have launched a bid to recapture Mosul dam from jihadists, a senior Kurdish military official says.

Major General Abdelrahman Korini says Kurdish Peshmerga with US air support have seized control of the eastern side of the dam.

Sources within Mosul said an air strike close to the dam by US fighter jets killed 11 IS militants and injured six others.

The dam, which is Iraq's largest, provides electricity to northern parts of the country and is key to efforts by Islamic State militants to provide electricity to areas under their control.

Troops in combat expect to use lethal force to achieve military objectives, and to defend themselves from others who are trying to kill them.

What message does it send to communities when police are armed and outfitted in the same way? And what message does it send to the police themselves?

Mining giant BHP to split, spin off assets

BHP Billiton has confirmed that it will split the company and spin off its second tier assets into a new corporation.

In an announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange on Friday, the world’s biggest mining group said it had explored whether to sell its “non-core” assets or house them in a new company and had opted for a demerger.

It is expected to reveal the full details of the plan when it releases its full year results on Tuesday but speculation today is that the new company will be headquartered in Perth with a mixture of the company’s South African and Australian nickel, manganese and aluminium assets.

Abbott criticised for 'bewildering' Scottish independence comments

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has waded into the Scottish independence debate, telling a British newspaper that a breakaway Scotland would not help the world.

Scotland goes to the polls next month to decide whether to end the 307-year-old union with England.

"I think that the people who would like to see the break-up of the United Kingdom are not the friends of justice, the friends of freedom," Mr Abbott said.

A spokesman for the Scottish independence campaign has responded to Mr Abbott's comments by saying independence seems to be working well for Australia.
