Tourists missing after boat sinks in Indonesia

Australian consular officials are trying to confirm if any Australians are among 15 tourists missing after their boat sank east of Bali.

The boat had been heading from Lombok to Komodo island when it is believed the engine died and stormy weather forced it against a reef.

Twenty tourists and five crew members were on board the vessel when it capsized, and 10 of the tourists were pulled from the water by local fishermen and rescue crews.

Those rescued were from New Zealand, Britain, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and France, but the nationalities of those still missing are not immediately clear.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says Australian officials are in contact with local authorities about the matter.

It's not you, Mr Hockey, it's the budget

It is neither the Treasurer's sales proficiency that is lacking, nor his energy or application. He simply has a dud product that no one wants to buy.

The two main problems with the budget are that it's an attempt at a quick fix to long-term dilemmas, and that is shifts the onus of budgetary repair from older and relatively wealthy Australians to younger, disenfranchised and those less well off.

Unhappily for Joe Hockey, he faces another gruelling week where once again he must "take arms against a sea of troubles".

Mining giant BHP to split, spin off assets

BHP Billiton has confirmed that it will split the company and spin off its second tier assets into a new corporation.

In an announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange on Friday, the world’s biggest mining group said it had explored whether to sell its “non-core” assets or house them in a new company and had opted for a demerger.

It is expected to reveal the full details of the plan when it releases its full year results on Tuesday but speculation today is that the new company will be headquartered in Perth with a mixture of the company’s South African and Australian nickel, manganese and aluminium assets.

Loggers back inclusion of environmentalists in forest group

The head of the Forest Industries Association (FIAT) says conservation groups should not have been left out of the Tasmanian Government's new industry advisory group.

The new ministerial advisory council includes the Forest Industries Association, the Farmers and Graziers Association and Forestry Tasmania, but leaves out green groups.

FIAT chief executive Terry Edwards said conservation groups should not have been left out.

"My point of view remains exactly as it has always been, that I think the environmental movement have a legitimate claim to have a voice inside a council such as this one," he said.
