Palmer brands Chinese government 'mongrels' who 'shoot own people'

Clive Palmer has launched an extraordinary attack on China's government, calling them "mongrels" who "shoot their own people".

The head of the Palmer United Party was being asked about his legal battle against a Chinese state-owned company on the ABC's Q&A program last night.

Mr Palmer accused the Chinese government of wanting to take over Australian ports to get the nation's resources for free.

"We've had three judgements in the Federal Court and the Supreme Court of Western Australia and an arbitration against these Chinese mongrels - I'm saying that because they're Communist, they shoot their own people, they haven't got a justice system and they want to take over this country," he said.

Forget politics, we may need a Tax Commission

No more muddling through. No more potholing. No more ad hockery. It may be time to consider forming an independent Tax Commission.

It could offer advice and seek submissions like the Productivity Commission does, or analyse, develop and deliver reform packages similar to the Reserve Bank.

If Tony Abbott wants to be remembered for a few key achievements, it is hard to imagine a more lasting legacy than genuine, innovative tax and transfer reform.

Silex shelves major solar power plant on RET uncertainty

One of Australia's largest solar power projects has been shelved due to Renewable Energy Target uncertainty.

The 100-megawatt Silex Mildura solar power station would have provided electricity to 40,000 homes, but after years of work the project has been abandoned.

The company's chief executive says uncertainty about the future of the Renewable Energy Target (RET) is a significant factor in the decision to shelve the power station development.

However, energy companies have responded by arguing that the RET is ineffective at promoting renewable energy developments.
