Beheading of journalist has shocked the entire world: Obama

US president Barack Obama has responded to the beheading of American journalist James Foley by Islamic State militants, saying it "shocked the conscience of the entire world".

He vowed the United States would do what it must to protect its citizens as American warplanes continued to strike IS targets in Iraq.

The video, which the White House says is authentic, shows the killing of 40-year-old Foley, a freelance journalist who had been kidnapped in Syria in 2012.

Foley's parents say they cannot understand why their son was killed in such a brutal manner and have asked IS to spare the life of another journalist they hold.
