ISIS militants expand across northern Iraq, seize city of Tikrit

An Al Qaeda-linked militant group has overrun the Iraqi city of Tikrit as 500,000 people flee in the wake of its march towards Baghdad.

The capture of Tikrit comes a day after the major city of Mosul fell to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) - Sunni militants who are waging sectarian war on both sides of the Iraqi-Syrian frontier.

The insurgents have also taken diplomats, soldiers and children inside the Turkish consulate in Mosul hostage, sparking Turkish warnings of the "harshest retaliation" if they are harmed.
