ISIS militants expand across northern Iraq, seize key oil refinery

An Al Qaeda-linked militant group which has seized the northern Iraqi city of Mosul has extended its control to an area further south that includes the country's biggest oil refinery.

Militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant freed prisoners after capturing the key facility in Baiji overnight, and also took control of Tikrit - the hometown of executed former dictator Saddam Hussein.

The insurgents have also taken diplomats, soldiers and children inside the Turkish consulate in Mosul hostage, sparking Turkish warnings of the "harshest retaliation" if they are harmed.
