ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has warned against falling for Islamic State's "hype", saying the terrorist group has "many more smartphones than guns, many more Twitter accounts than soldiers". In his first national security statement the PM said the unilateral deployment of Australian combat troops on the ground in Iraq or Syria was "neither feasible or practical", putting him at odds with Tony Abbott and former defence minister Kevin Andrews

  • Australia's tropical cyclone warning centre will consider investigating its naming conventions after US research found people take the threat of female-named hurricanes less seriously than male names

  • Game of Thrones fans may see one of their favourites return from the dead after the show tweeted a season six teaser poster with a partial shot of Jon Snow's blood-stained face. For those of you trying to figure out what all the hype is about, the popular character was killed off at the end of season five. Or so it seemed...

Go behind the scenes in the making of Sarah Ferguson's powerful two-part documentary series Hitting Home, which investigates Australia's domestic violence crisis. It will air on ABC tonight and tomorrow at 8.30pm.

Here's what's coming up today:

  • 6.00pm AEDT: The AFL draft takes place in Adelaide

  • 7.00pm AEDT: US secretary of state John Kerry meets Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu followed by a separate meeting with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas

  • 8.30pm AEDT: Three Vatican officials and two reporters go on trial accused of conspiring to leak documents

  • 11.30pm AEDT: The UN will release a progress report on its goal to eliminate AIDS by 2030

  • 3.30am AEDT Wednesday: US president Barack Obama welcomes French president Francois Hollande to the White House to discuss international efforts to defeat the Islamic State group
