ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • Former Coalition staffer James Ashby has claimed Assistant Minister for Innovation Wyatt Roy advised him to copy former speaker Peter Slipper's diary. Federal Police are investigating allegations Mr Slipper's diary was illegally copied in 2012 and leaked to the now Special Minister of State Mal Brough. Follow our live blog for more

  • The governor of the Mexican state of Sinaloa, Mario López Valdez, said the case of two missing Western Australian surfers is a "black mark" against the region. North America correspondent Michael Vincent has said the remote area, which is immersed in a violent drug war, is so dangerous that three local newspaper editors told him it was too risky to send reporters in search of witnesses

  • Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said the Government would not be renegotiating its emissions reduction target at the Paris talks, but kept the door open for reviewing it in 2020. This has annoyed some Liberal backbenchers, including Dennis Jensen, who said "we should not change those targets ... stick with what we agreed [in] the partyroom"

London women are being fat-shamed on public transport with an anonymous group handing out cruel flyers. The cards claim to be from a group called "Overweight Haters Ltd" and have been condemned by public transport operators

Here's what's coming up:

  • 6.05pm AEDT: Immigration Minister Peter Dutton speaks on RN Drive

  • 7.30pm AEDT: French president Francois Hollande holds a summit with 12 heads of state from Africa to combat climate change

  • 8.00pm AEDT: Official opening of talks in Paris involving negotiators from 195 countries who will try to broker the world's first truly global deal to limit the effects of global warming

  • 10.00pm AEDT: German chancellor Angela Merkel to give a press conference after cabinet meets to discuss Germany's planned participation in the fight against Islamic State

  • 10.30pm: Lateline will air an interview with the mother of Kate Malonyay, who was killed by an ex-boyfriend who was given a funeral with full military honours
