ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • French authorities have named the suspected mastermind of the Paris attacks. He is Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a 27-year-old Belgian believed to be in Syria, according to media reports.

  • President Francois Hollande has said "France is at war" and will strike Islamic State targets "mercilessly". He also wants laws changed to allow dual nationals who carry out hostile acts to be stripped of French citizenship.

  • Meanwhile Barack Obama has warned against linking the refugee issue in Europe with the terrorist threat. "[Those] fleeing Syria are the most harmed by terrorism ... it is important we do not close our hearts [to them]." But sending US troops to fight IS would be a mistake, he says.

Here's what's coming up today:

  • 8.00am AEDT: Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is due to speak to AM on ABC radio

  • 8.30am AEDT: Social Services Minister Christian Porter is due to speak on Radio National

  • 9.00am AEDT: Justice Minister Michael Keenan opens a summit on counter-terrorism funding

  • 1.00pm AEDT: The NT Government is expected to announce which company will build a billion-dollar gas pipeline

  • 1.30pm AEDT: The final day of the second cricket Test resumes in Perth between Australia and New Zealand

  • 4.30pm AEDT: Malcolm Turnbull is due to arrive in The Philippines for meetings ahead of the APEC summit

  • 7.00pm AEDT: Tony Abbott is the guest speaker at a Liberal group's Christmas party
