ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • The Immigration Department says that "some force" was needed to bring a core group of detainees under control at the Christmas Island Detention Centre, but the unrest is now over. Catch up on the fiery Question Time debate on our live blog

  • On that topic, Australia's treatment of asylum seekers has been in the spotlight at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Countries including Fiji, Turkey, Norway and the United States have all raised concerns about offshore processing.

  • Australia's biggest meat processors want the Federal Government to step in when it comes to halal certification. In documents obtained by the ABC the companies say the system is creating a monopoly. This issue isn't likely to go away as it is also the subject of an ongoing Senate inquiry.

  • And how would you feel about letting hookworm larvae burrow under your skin and into your intestines? That's exactly what doctors at James Cook University intend to do to find a cure for gluten intolerance.

As we deal with the fall-out of the World Anti-Doping Agency's damning report on Russia, Tracey Holmes writes for The Drum that some athletics officials will "waltz into Rio, striding the IOC's red carpet"

Planning to chuck a sickie tomorrow? We have the excuses your boss is most likely to believe

Here's what's coming up:

  • 4.25pm AEDT: The Duchess of Cornwall will attend a domestic violence roundtable and an opals exhibition in South Australia before flying to Sydney with her husband Prince Charles later this evening

  • 5.30pm AEDT: Immigration Minister Peter Dutton is due to release a new report on border security written by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute

  • 9.30pm AEDT: New images will be released from the spacecraft Philae, which landed on a comet one year ago

  • 5.00am AEDT: Expect an update from the team scanning Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt. Last time we heard from them they found evidence of a possible hidden chamber
