ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • The Christmas Island Detention Centre is experiencing a "major disturbance", but the Immigration Department denies reports of a riot. One detainee told the ABC the centre was "a complete disaster zone" with "fires everywhere" and "ransacked" areas. The violence erupted after refugee Fazal Chegeni escaped and was found dead over the weekend

  • The issue has dominated federal politics today and you can get the latest on our live blog. You can watch Peter Dutton address the issue here

  • Also in politics, Malcolm Turnbull has used Question Time to rule out increasing the GST without compensation schemes for low income households. He says that would be "inconceivable"

  • And the Australian cricket side has no doubt enjoyed a long lunch after dismissing New Zealand in the morning session at the Gabba and winning the first Test by 208 runs

Also popular today is this video of a great white shark slamming into a tourist's diving cage in South Africa
