ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • There are reports out of the US that one of the country's military satellites picked up a mid-air heat flash near a Russian passenger plane just before it crashed in Egypt. We'll hear more on that when investigators analyse the flight recorders. So far we know they're in good condition.

  • Workers in Brisbane's CDB were shocked by an Air Force Globemaster's low-altitude fly-by this morning. Some residents' responses are not fit to print in a respectable newsletter.

  • Josh Hazlewood is back in the Australian side for the first cricket Test against New Zealand, starting at the Gabba tomorrow. Our story includes an interactive that shows how the two sides match-up.

Here's what's coming up tonight:

  • 4.15pm AEDT: A state reception for Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall at the start of their New Zealand visit

  • 8.00pm AEDT: Bosnian and Serbian governments hold first joint session since the end of their war

  • 9.00pm AEDT: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov meets UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura in Moscow

  • 9.00pm AEDT: Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi launches a new book on the Vatican Bank
