ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • Searches will resume this morning for five people still missing, four in Tasmania and one man New South Wales, as a result of the massive storm cell that lashed Australia's east coast. Floodwaters are still threatening Tasmania, with rivers in the state's south still rising

  • New DNA technology has confirmed Aboriginal Australians as the continent's first people. A 2001 paper had suggested Australia's oldest human remains, found at Lake Mungo, were from an extinct lineage of modern humans that occupied the continent before Aboriginal Australians. Researchers say the new analysis overturns that claim

  • The UN atomic watchdog says North Korea appears to have reactivated a plant used for reprocessing plutonium for use in nuclear weapons. The observations were made through satellite imagery and echo claims made by John Hopkins University last week

The Brexit debate has divided the United Kingdom. Four Corners has spoken to the people of rural Somerset, one of the regions at the forefront of the push for the UK to leave the European Union on June 23.

Here's what's coming up:

  • 9:00am AEST: The youngest Australian to ever climb Mount Everest, Alyssa Azar, returns home after her record breaking climb

  • 9:30am AEST: Six-time Australian Olympic shooter Michael Diamond is due to face court on alleged drink driving and firearms offences. The matter could jeopardise his place on the Olympic team for Rio

  • 3:00pm AEST: Chief Minister and Treasurer Andrew Barr will hand down the ACT budget
