Election 2016: Your afternoon campaign wrap

Australia Votes 2016
Shorten attacked for childcare comments, Turnbull says he's a feminist
Good afternoon,

We start week five of this election campaign with Australia's east coast battling devastating storm conditions. The PM and Opposition Leader have offered their condolences to the families of people who have lost their lives and have urged everyone to take caution in flooded areas.

Let's take a look at what else happened on the campaign trail today:

1. SENATOR FIONA NASH TOOK AIM AT BILL SHORTEN OVER HIS CHILDCARE COMMENTS

"I think Bill Shorten's disgraceful comments yesterday about saying men were having to look to their little women to look after childcare were simply appalling," Nationals deputy leader Fiona Nash said.

She was fired up over Mr Shorten's comments yesterday that "men in Australia rely on women ... to organise childcare".

You can watch more of Ms Nash's reaction here but FWIW, it wasn't the end of the slinging match.

Mr Shorten stood by his comments and offered up some more, saying: "Men are stepping up in terms of childcare. But the fact of the matter is that the burden of childcare falls disproportionately on working mums."

Those comments aside, the Treasurer has spoken about the acutal policy, saying Labor's $3 billion pledge to boost the childcare benefit was a promise made with "money that simply isn't there". The Opposition plans to release its costings in the last week of the campaign.

2. EARLIER, THE PM AND OPPOSITION LEADER WERE ON THE SAME PAGE

It was a rare sight but Malcolm Turnbull and Mr Shorten came together in Melbourne this morning to attend a RSL conference.

Mr Shorten headed to Adelaide. Mr Turnbull postponed a campaign stopover in Tasmania due to flooding. He did visit Engineers Australia in Melbourne where he spoke to the media.

Also, this ...

3. MALCOLM TURNBULL IS A FEMINIST. HE SAID SO HIMSELF

Today a reporter asked the PM: "A lot of people spend time talking about female empowerment, would you describe yourself as a feminist?"

Mr Turnbull replied: "I would describe myself as a feminist."

"As I often say, women hold up half the sky. I [had] respect for women absolutely ingrained in me at a very early age by my father."

ELECTION SPOTLIGHT: SPEAKING OF THE PM'S FATHER ...

... he's the focus of a video released by the PM. You can check it out here.

The deeply sentimental video, posted on social media, delves into the personal story of the PM and his father Bruce Turnbull.

Dee Madigan, advertising guru and creative director of Campaign Edge - a consultancy that has worked on Labor campaigns - said the move showed there was genuine concern the PM was out of touch.

"I am surprised it's gone this way, because it shows panic ... I'm not sure that they're in a position to need to panic yet anyway," she said.

FROM THE DRUM: PAULA MATTHEWSON

In just over a week, Australian voters will start to cast their ballots in the 2016 federal election. Early voting in the "pre poll" is meant to be done only by voters who can't get to a polling booth on election day.

With nearly a third of people expected to cast their vote before then, campaign strategists are tweaking their messages now and giving us an insight into what is biting in marginal seats.

COMING UP NEXT:
  • 6:06pm AEST: Arts and Communications Minister Mitch Fifield will be on RN Drive
  • Get ready. Penny Wong and Mathias Cormann will be on a live panel on the 7.30 program
