Happy Sunday,

We're into the home stretch of the 2016 federal election campaign with just 20 days to go until Australia heads to the polls.

Here's a chance to catch up and take a peek at some of the ABC's best opinion and analysis from the campaign in the past week.

THE DRUM: TERRY BARNES SAYS WE MUST RESTORE THE VALUE OF A MANDATE

Barnes writes:

"Both Labor and the Coalition have abandoned the principle of "constructive opposition" in recent years and have refused to accept a ruling party's mandate.

"With crossbenchers circling in Election 2016, this must be rectified."

WHY DO SOME CANDIDATES RUN WHEN THEY ARE CERTAIN TO LOSE?

Political reporter Jane Norman spoke to two candidates, Labor's Carl Katter and Liberal Jessica Adelan-Langford, who are trying to win the unwinnable.

She writes:

"The spotlight is always on the big-name candidates in the close-run contests — but there are hundreds more who have a go, knowing they are certain to lose."

ANTONY GREEN BROKE DOWN THE NUMBERS OF WHO IS ACTUALLY RUNNING THIS ELECTION

After some last-minute announcements, nominations for candidates closed this week.

ABC Election Analyst Antony Green went in depth to bring you a summary of the candidates and parties standing for this year's federal election.

Are there more or less candidates for the House of Representatives compared to 2013? Which state has the most candidates? And which major party is running fewer candidates compared to the last election?

Here's all the answers, and more.

THE DRUM: BARRIE CASSIDY EXPLAINS WHAT LABOR'S BUDGET JARGON MEANS

Cassidy writes:

"The real damage for Labor in coming clean on the books for the next four years is that it confirms the case the Coalition has been trying to make since the campaign started - that Labor will spend and tax more than the Government will.

"Apart from that, it takes some of the pressure off the Government for having made a poor debt and deficit situation even worse."
