Second Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek could operate 24-hours

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has left the way open for Sydney's second airport - to be built in the city's west at Badgerys Creek - to operate around the clock.

Mr Abbott and Infrastructure Minister Warren Truss this afternoon announced Federal Cabinet approval of Badgerys Creek as the site of the new airport.

After decades of debate about the location, Mr Abbott - who wants to be known as the "infrastructure prime minister" - says he wants to "get cracking".

However, he says the first flight will "realistically" take off in the mid-2020's and when it does, it may not be subject to any limits on flight times.

All eyes on the maverick man and the Senate

There's one man who knows how to make politics interesting and annoy both the right and the left with his views on climate change, tax, mining and even twerking.

He may be the master of noise and chutzpah and can possibly even "buy seats" in Parliament, but that doesn't mean he isn't a worthy adversary who appeals to many voters.

The major parties can complain about his deep pockets all they like, but until they can restore faith in mainstream politics they'll continue to be vulnerable to his power.

Airlines, business back Badgerys Creek, Sydney Airport noncommittal

The Federal Government's announcement of a second airport for Sydney at Badgerys Creek has been met with enthusiasm by airlines and business groups, but the owner of the city's existing airport has given a lukewarm response.

Sydney Airport says it will engage in discussions with the Federal Government on the project, as it has a contractual first right to develop and operate a second Sydney airport.

Qantas and Virgin say they support the plan, provided that appropriate infrastructure is built to support the new airport.

Business groups say it is a great opportunity to create new industries and jobs in western Sydney, with the airport as a hub.

Government resists IPCC call for deep cuts to carbon emissions

The Federal Government is giving little sign that it will sign up to the deep pollution cuts recommended in the latest report by the United Nations panel on climate change.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is calling for global emissions cuts of up to 70 per cent by the middle of the decade, if nations want to meet their goal to limit temperature growth to two degrees Celsius.

The report - designed to guide negotiations heading into the next round of global climate talks in Paris in 2015 - also says the growth in greenhouse gas emissions has accelerated in the past decade, despite the efforts already made to curb pollution.
