Royals land in Red Centre for tour of Uluru

Prince William and Catherine are visiting Uluru Kata-Tjutu National Park today, 31 years after the iconic rock was last visited by newlywed Royals.

The Royals will take part in a guided walk after visiting the National Park's cultural centre and the National Indigenous Training Academy.

The couple were welcomed with a reception hosted by Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles.

Later this afternoon the Royal couple will witness the rare sight of water cascading off Uluru. Baby George is not taking part in the trip.

Super tax breaks the 'Hindenburg' of federal budget

A left-leaning think tank says the federal budget would be more than $13 billion better off if the Government scrapped all tax breaks on superannuation and dramatically increased the age pension.

The radical proposal is contained in a report by the Australia Institute, which will be released today, and comes amid increasing speculation the Coalition is preparing to increase the retirement age to 70.

Medicare Local health hubs expected to face $1.8b budget axe

The ABC has learned a number of Medicare Local chief executives have been told the Federal Government plans to shut down the current system.

Speculation has been mounting that the local health hubs, which were set up under the Rudd government at a cost of $1.8 billion and employ 3,000 people, will be scrapped in next month's budget.

Before the election Tony Abbott said his Government would not shut any Medicare Locals, but also warned some may not stay open in their current form.

National Water Commission under threat from budget cuts

The National Water Commission could be axed as part of the Federal Government's savings drive.

The decade-old commission, an independent statutory authority which advises the Commonwealth on water policy, is "in the mix" for cuts and AM understands it is likely to be wound up.

Scrapping the commission would save the Government about $30 million over four years.
