Cyclone Ita loses steam as it moves out to sea

Rains have eased on the Queensland coast overnight as Tropical Cyclone Ita loses steam as it tracks further out to sea.

The category one system is around 280 kilometres east south-east of Mackay, moving east south-east at 34 kilometres per hour.

The weather bureau says the heavy rain has eased on the central coast and conditions are expected to improve as the cyclone moves further offshore.

Ita made landfall as a category-four system near Cape Flattery, north of Cooktown, on Friday night

Premier Campbell Newman will today continue inspecting the aftermath in Ingham, where the township has been cut off by floodwaters and motorists are stranded on the Bruce Highway.
