It has been more than six months since Treasurer Joe Hockey announced the independent commission would look into the Government's spending. Mr Hockey received the commission's report late last month and it will be released early this afternoon. Opposition treasury spokesman Chris Bowen has criticised the timing of the release of the report, saying it is "unconscionable" that it was not released "weeks ago". The current smelter is to be turned into a multi-metal recycling facility and a big environment improvement is expected for the regional city. Belgian owner Nyrstar now has confirmed the redevelopment will go ahead once the funding package with Premier Jay Weatherill is finalised.
