Cradle-to-grave cuts recommended by Commission of Audit

A raft of potentially explosive spending cuts to government services and payments have been recommended by the Abbott Government's Commission of Audit.

Family payments, child care, health care, education, unemployment and pension payments, aged care and the NDIS are all among those areas in the firing line.

Its 86 recommendations, detailed in more than 1,200 pages, address major structural changes that the commission says could achieve a surplus of 1 per cent by 2023-24.

Treasurer Joe Hockey has been quick to emphasise that "this is not the budget", but has failed to rule out adopting any of the commission's proposals.

Industry assistance and support for exporters in the crosshairs

Industry assistance and support for exporters and the tourism sector face the axe under proposals from the Commission of Audit, which also recommends Australia Post and the Royal Australian Mint be privatised.

The Commission of Audit's proposals to return the budget to a sustainable surplus would leave the business sector with a mix of winners and losers.

Most in the business sector acknowledge the need for Commonwealth budget repair while the economy is reasonably robust, and would applaud both of the commission's recommendations that Federal Governments target a 1 per cent of GDP surplus.
