'Difficult' to ensure safety on Manus Island at all times: Morrison

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has backed away from guaranteeing the safety of asylum seekers inside the Manus Island detention centre on PNG.

Riots at the centre on February 16 and 17 this year resulted in violent clashes that left one man dead and 62 people injured.

Former G4S guards and other witnesses interviewed by Four Corners allege that "both sides" in the violence were "arming up" before it occurred.

Elevate tax talk above mere politics

If there is one thing to be salvaged from the talk of a tough budget, it is that tax is finally being elevated above politics to be restored as an instrument of economic policy.

Australian banks accused of backing 'unethical' foreign companies

Leading Australian banks are financing companies accused of land grabbing, child labour and illegal logging, according to an Oxfam report released today.

The Oxfam report identifies four international cases where Australia's biggest banks have funded - directly or indirectly - companies accused of improperly or illegally acquiring land from local people.

Oxfam's chief executive Helen Szoke said the big four - National Australia Bank, Commonwealth, Westpac and ANZ - are not living up to their image as global leaders in sustainable banking.

"There is a gap between what the big four banks say they do and what they actually do," she said.
