Anti-Islam hate campaign raises tensions to violent new heights

Police and ASIO are scrambling to defuse serious tensions between Australian far-right groups and Islamist extremists, which have reached unprecedented heights with death threats and an apparent attempted murder.

Police believe the shooting was part of a backlash against the Australian Defence League, a registered not-for-profit organisation which incites its followers to violence and has in recent months escalated a vicious hate campaign against Australian Muslims.

Neville's life lived in good measure

On Good Friday very late Jill Wran rang me to say that the end of Neville Wran's life was nigh. It was a very long conversation.

A left-leaning think tank says the federal budget would be more than $13 billion better off if the Government scrapped all tax breaks on superannuation and dramatically increased the age pension.

The radical proposal is contained in a report by the Australia Institute, which will be released today, and comes amid increasing speculation the Coalition is preparing to increase the retirement age to 70.

National Water Commission under threat from budget cuts

The National Water Commission could be axed as part of the Federal Government's savings drive.
