In the most serious case, up to eight gunshots were fired into the Sydney home of a former leader of an anti-Islamic hate group earlier this month. Police believe the shooting was part of a backlash against the Australian Defence League, a registered not-for-profit organisation which incites its followers to violence and has in recent months escalated a vicious hate campaign against Australian Muslims. The man was doing what is known as the 'squeeze test' by trying to climb between the boulders. He managed to complete the task yesterday but when he tried it again last night he became trapped. Paramedics are treating the man who has suffered life-threatening crush syndrome. The decade-old commission, an independent statutory authority which advises the Commonwealth on water policy, is "in the mix" for cuts and AM understands it is likely to be wound up. Scrapping the commission would save the Government about $30 million over four years.
