Liberal Party scrambles to find O'Farrell replacement

New South Wales may have a new premier by this evening, with the Liberal Party hoping to put up a consensus candidate to replace Barry O'Farrell when it meets today.

Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian and Treasurer Mike Baird are considering their options, and the Minister for Family and Community Services, Pru Goward, may also put herself forward for the top job.

Mr O'Farrell announced his shock resignation yesterday in the wake of a "massive memory fail" when giving evidence to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) on Tuesday.

You don't need ICAC to see the lies in politics

Politics is not the natural home of high-minded probity. It is a business built on daily deception, on a constant pea and thimble shuffle with the truth.

Barry O'Farrell's departure - by all appearances and accounts an honourable response to an inadvertent mistruth - is a gleaming example of the profound hypocrisy of our public life, of the gap between private probity and public mendacity.

If politics wanted to restore its sense of honour and decent service, then it might bring a little of the O'Farrell ethic to its day-to-day.

Search resumes for hundreds missing in South Korean ferry disaster

At least six people are dead and hundreds are missing after a ferry sank off the southern coast with 462 passengers and crew.

South Korea's coastguard has confirmed 179 have been rescued from the sinking ferry; however, it said hundreds are still unaccounted for.

Coastguards and navy divers have resumed the search for around 280 people still missing in the early hours of Thursday morning.

They will also be seeking answers to many questions surrounding Wednesday's accident, notably what caused the Sewol vessel to list and then flip over entirely, leaving only a small section of its hull above water.

Rescue efforts on Thursday could be be hampered by difficult weather conditions, amid forecasts of rain, strong winds and fog.

Chinese economy slows, GDP growth at 7.4pc

Chinese economic growth has slowed to 7.4 per cent for the year to the end of March, but beat forecasts.

That gross domestic product result is down from 7.7 per cent in the previous figures for the year to December.

However, the result was a little higher than economist forecasts, which centred on 7.3 per cent growth.

That has pushed the Australian dollar slightly higher, from around 93.5 US cents to just over 93.7 US cents immediately after.
