Maslin children killed on MH17 remembered

A memorial service for three Perth children and their grandfather killed on Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 has drawn 1,000 people.

Mo, Evie and Otis Maslin, aged 12, 10 and 8, and their grandfather, Nick Norris, were aboard the Malaysia Airlines jet shot down over Ukraine in July.

Today their parents, families and friends came together to celebrate their lives, telling stories and anecdotes about them, drawing smiles, laughter and tears.

The children's mother, Rin Norris, said her arms would "always be reaching for them", while father Anthony Maslin described them as "unblemished, innocent, perfect souls" who had crammed more into their short lives than most people would in three lifetimes.

Unemployment crackdown: one size doesn't fit all

Most unemployed people don't need long-term solutions, just a short-term safety net.

For these people, quarantined payments, work for the dole and training programs could simply hinder their job search, while wasting a large amount of taxpayer money.

Determining who gets employment policies based on race is wrong, but so too is applying blanket policies to everyone.

Senior Liberals deny Abbott's 'signature' PPL scheme is on hold

Senior Liberals have rejected reports the Prime Minister's "signature" paid parental leave policy has been delayed, but say getting budget measures through Parliament will take priority.

Fairfax is reporting the scheme is unlikely to be put to the Parliament this year because of backbench dissent and a lack of crossbench support in the Upper House.

But Cabinet ministers Scott Morrison and Barnaby Joyce say the Government is simply trying to get its budget passed and there are no intentions to delay the $5.5 billion scheme.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says he expects Tony Abbott will "quietly bury the proposition and we will never see the legislation".

Nuclear waste dump could 'close Aboriginal gap': Hawke

Former Prime Minister Bob Hawke says the storage of nuclear waste in the Northern Territory would help "close the gap" for Aboriginal people.

And, he said, NT Chief Minister Adam Giles was "keenly supportive" of his proposal.

Speaking at the Garma Festival in north-east Arnhem Land, Mr Hawke said Australia had "a responsibility and an obligation" to take nuclear waste by-product.

"We would not only be doing good for the rest of the world, we would be doing enormously well for Australia, as the world would pay handsomely for this service," Mr Hawke said.

"And we would do particularly well for Aboriginal Australians."
