Gunman killed inside Canadian parliament after shooting soldier dead

Security forces are on alert across Canada after a gunman attacked the nation's parliament, shooting a soldier dead before himself being killed by a parliamentary official.

Canadian PM Stephen Harper declared that the nation would "never be intimidated" and said the soldier, who was standing on ceremonial guard duty outside the nation's main war memorial in Ottawa, had been "murdered in cold blood".

The gunman has been identified as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, a Muslim convert who reportedly fought in Libya during the uprising which deposed strongman Moamar Gaddafi.

He was shot dead by the parliament's sergeant-at-arms, who has been hailed a hero by MPs who barricaded themselves inside a room as security guards traded fire with the gunman.

Australia, in contrast, has maintained a more hard-nosed sense of the risk of danger, working hard to pay its alliance dues.
