Texas healthcare worker tests positive for Ebola

American authorities say a breach of protocol is responsible for a nurse contracting Ebola from a Liberian patient treated in Texas before his death last week.

The infected worker, identified as a woman but not named by authorities, was confirmed as the first person to contract the disease in the US.

The director of the Centres for Disease Control (CDC), Dr Tom Frieden, said there must have been an inadvertent breach of protocol during the care of Liberian man Thomas Duncan.

Dr Frieden said dialysis and intubation of an infected person were procedures considered high risk for transmission of the virus and both were performed on Duncan.
