Six of Australia's F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets are on standby in the United Arab Emirates ready to carry out air strikes against Islamic State (IS) militants. The Federal Government gave the go-ahead yesterday for action against IS in Iraq with the first air strikes expected within days. The White House has welcomed Australia's commitment to combat the militants who have edged closer towards the Syria-Turkey border. But this is phase 1. The Abbott Government should be prepared for subsequent phases which will require even more difficult decisions. Air strikes can only do so much. The Iraqi army and its militias will have to seize and control ground. Coalition partners, including Australia, will have to decide to what extent they will assist. Sean Pollard, 23, lost part of an arm and his other hand in the attack at Kelpids Beach, Wylie Bay, on Thursday morning. He remains in Royal Perth Hospital. Two great white sharks were caught and killed after WA's Department of Fisheries deployed drum lines off the beach following the incident. The sharks have been taken to Perth by truck for research purposes but the Department of Fisheries has conceded it might not be possible to confirm whether the sharks killed were involved in the attack.
