Catholic Synod revises gay acceptance proposal

The final version of a controversial Vatican document has radically revised its earlier wording on homosexuals, eliminating language that talked more positively of them than ever before in church history.

A draft of the document released on Monday called for the Church to take a more progressive stance on family issues รข€" including homosexuality and unmarried couples.

Conservative bishops vowed to change the language, saying it had created confusion among the faithful and threatened to undermine the traditional family.

A section of the draft document titled "Welcoming gays" was renamed "Pastoral attention towards persons with homosexual orientations".

Is the cost of our symbolism worth it?

Australia faces the same question over Islamic State as it does with climate change: is our symbolic contribution to the global effort worth the cost?

Whether Islamic State is degraded, destroyed or continues to expand the territory under its control will not be significantly influenced by Australia's current contribution.
