18yo woman tests negative for Ebola virus

An 18-year-old woman in Brisbane has tested negative for the Ebola virus after arriving from West Africa 12 days ago and developing a fever on Saturday night.

She was transferred to an isolation unit at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and prior to that had been in home quarantine.

The woman will be tested again in two days' time.

Queensland's chief health officer, Dr Jeannette Young, said woman was not a healthcare worker and was planning to stay in Australia indefinitely.

The woman was part of a family of nine that arrived, Dr Young said, though she was the only one in isolation.

Dr Young said the woman and her family do not pose a risk to the community.

One in five European banks fail 2013 health checks

Roughly one in five European banks failed landmark health checks of their ability to withstand another economic crisis at the end of last year, but most have since repaired their finances, the European Central Bank (ECB) said.

Painting a brighter picture than had been expected, the ECB found the biggest problems in Italy, Cyprus and Greece but concluded that banks' capital holes had since chiefly been plugged, leaving only a modest 10 billion euros to be raised.

Italy faces the biggest challenge with nine of its banks falling short and two still needing to raise funds.
