Islamic State launches fresh attacks on Kobane

Islamic State (IS) fighters have launched fresh attacks in Kobane in an attempt to encircle the Kurdish defenders of the Syrian border town.

IS militants attacked western parts of the town but are yet to take the border crossing point with Turkey, which is a vital supply and exit route.

Earlier on Saturday (local time) Kurdish fighters thwarted a bid by IS jihadists to advance into the centre of Kobane.

US-led coalition warplanes have also carried out six air strikes on IS targets south and east of the town early on Friday and Saturday (local time).

Kurdish militia and free Syrian army fighters have said they desperately need fresh supplies of ammunition and heavy weaponry in order to save the town.

The deepening worries come after fresh warnings this week that the problems in Europe could drag down the rest of the world.

The fallout saw the Australian share market dive more than two per cent yesterday and this morning the Australian dollar closed lower, at 86.85 US cents, after a rise in the US currency.
