Australian universities rise in world rankings but report questions reforms

Australian universities have risen in the latest global rankings, but the accompanying report questions the Government's proposed education reforms.

The Times Higher Education magazine's 11th annual rankings delivers mostly good news to Australian universities, with Melbourne University claiming the country's highest position.

"The data shows that Australia does not have just a few world-class universities, but a world-class system," the report said.

But it also raised questions about the Government's tertiary education reforms, asking "whether this admirable strength-in-depth can be maintained" under the proposed changes.

Can one Parliament really investigate another?

The Senate inquiry into the Queensland Government might be legitimate, but whether it is wise - or will be able to do its job - is another matter.

The question is whether or not the Senate committee has the power to compel state politicians and state public servants to give evidence to it or to require them to produce government documents.

If it does seek to compel evidence, and is supported by the Senate, it is likely that the Queensland Government would challenge its powers to do so and the matter would end up in the High Court.
