Australia Votes 2016
Keep on top of all the 2016 election news
Good morning, it's the first week of the federal election campaign.

To help you stay on top of the news, we're sending our politics subscribers updates on what's happening on the campaign trail.

Here are the stories making news this morning:
  • It's day one of a marathon eight-week campaign and both Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten are out campaigning in key seats in Queensland. Labor has its sights set on at least seven Sunshine State electorates, including Petrie on Brisbane's outskirts, which is held by the Coalition with a margin of 0.5 per cent. Further north, the Coalition will be fighting to hold on to Herbert and Capricornia
  • About 950,000 people are missing from the electoral roll, including many young people who will be voting for the first time. The Australian Electoral Commission has urged everyone to check their enrolment details as rolls will close on May 23

Here's what you need to know today:
  • Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is making his way to Brisbane for day one of the official campaign. The press pack will be in tow
  • Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is also heading to Queensland. It's noteworthy that both leaders will begin their campaign in the Sunshine State, where some critical electorates are at stake
  • It's a significant, though largely administrative, event but at 9am the Governor-General's secretary will read a proclamation officially dissolving both houses of Parliament
