Australia Votes 2016
Opposition pledges to reverse Medicare rebate freeze and the Government matches funding for Campbelltown road
Good morning, it's week two of the federal election campaign.

To help you stay on top of the news, we're sending our politics subscribers updates from the campaign trail.

Here are the stories making news this morning:
  • Labor has announced its first big-ticket item of the campaign. They've pledged $12 billion over ten years to unwind the controversial freeze on Medicare rebates. The changes would apply to all services provided by GPs, allied health and other medical specialists — but not pathology and diagnostic imaging
  • The Prime Minister and Opposition Leader are both starting their day in Sydney. The PM will announce a $50 million upgrade to Appin Road in Campbelltown to improve safety and boost housing supply. It's the same announcement made by Labor yesterday
  • The Immigration Department has confirmed it is working with police to investigate allegations of serious criminality by Border Force officers. The PM has visited multiple Border Force facilities throughout the campaign but Government frontbencher Josh Frydenberg has defended the visits saying Australians could still have faith in the agency, despite the allegations
  • UNICEF's deputy representative in Lebanon, Luciano Calestini, has criticised Immigration Minister Peter Dutton's comments about "illiterate" refugees, saying the comments do nothing but vilify vulnerable people. He urged the Minister to revisit Lebanon's refugee camps
Here's what's coming up:
  • Mr Turnbull will make a roads announcement in Campbelltown, western Sydney
  • Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is also in Sydney this morning but he's expected to travel to the Central Coast to discuss his proposed Medicare rebate changes later today
  • Greens leader Richard Di Natale and MP Adam Bandt will be in Brunswick with the party's candidate for Wills, Samantha Ratnam
  • Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce will be in Gippsland, Victoria

ICYMI: Is climate change important to you?

Need some clarity around who supports what? As part of our Curious Campaign project, reporter Nick Harmsen investigated what Mr Turnbull, Mr Shorten and Mr Di Natale have said about the issue. He has outlined their positions on emission reduction targets, renewable energy, emissions trading schemes and 'direct action'. It's a useful guide. Read it now or bookmark it for later

That's a wrap for now. We'll be back this afternoon with an update.

In the meantime, you can check out our Australia Votes homepage for all the latest election news and analysis.
