Cory Bernardi out of top spot and popularity problems in WA
Good morning, it's the first week of the federal election campaign.

To help you stay on top of the news, we're sending our politics subscribers updates from the campaign trail.

Here are the stories making news this morning:
  • Cory Bernardi has been kicked out of top spot on the Liberals' Senate ticket in South Australia, with Education Minister Simon Birmingham taking over the number one position
  • WA Premier Colin Barnett insists he will play a role in the federal election campaign despite internal Liberal Party polling repeatedly showing his Government's unpopularity is dragging down the Coalition's vote in WA
  • The Prime Minister will take his campaign to western Sydney today, making his first stop in Penrith. The Opposition Leader is in North Queensland for the third day in a row


Here's what you need to know today:
  • 9:15am AEST: Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce is expected to make an announcement at the Olam cotton gin in Dalby on Queensland's Darling Downs
  • 9:15am AEST: Trade Minister Steve Ciobo will be in Yatala on the Gold Coast visiting a nail polish factory
  • 12:30pm AEST: Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek will be in Geelong for a jobs announcement
  • 1:15pm AEST: Greens leader Richard Di Natale will visit Perth
  • 1:45pm AEST: Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce will visit Maryborough, north of Brisbane, for the opening of the Wide Bay candidate's office
  • Meanwhile, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will be in Western Sydney and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will be in Mackay where he's expected to visit a school
