Australia Votes 2016
Peter Dutton's comments a major talking point, relief on the way for dairy farmers
Good afternoon,

Comments made by the Immigration Minister were the hot topic of the day, while Labor MP David Feeney defended himself after revelations he failed to declare a $2.3 million house.

Here's what happened today:

1. THERE COULD BE RELIEF ON THE WAY FOR DAIRY FARMERS

Deputy Prime Minister and Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce wants to make low-interest drought loans available to struggling dairy farmers and provide more rural financial counsellors.

He's also encouraged other major supermarkets to follow Coles' lead and return more money to farmers from milk sales.

Why all the urgency about milk all of a sudden? Last week Australia's largest dairy processor Murray Goulburn slashed the price it pays farmers for their milk. Here's why.

2. THINGS ARE UNCOMFORTABLE FOR LABOR MP DAVID FEENEY

He's defending himself against claims of dishonesty after it was revealed he failed to declare a $2.3 million house on his parliamentary register of interests.

"The assertion of dishonesty is a nonsense," he said. "There is no suggestion here that there is any conflict of interest, there is no suggestion that I've made any gain through this omission."

The fact that the house is negatively geared though, and that Mr Feeney is locked in a close battle with the Greens to hold his inner-city Melbourne seat of Batman, makes this look like an issue that won't disappear anytime soon.

3. EVERYONE HAD A SAY ON PETER DUTTON'S REFUGEE COMMENTS

What comments? These ones.

The PM went into bat for his under-fire Immigration Minister and said he was "outstanding". Foreign Minister Julie Bishop offered her own explanation but Government campaign spokesman Mathias Cormann refused to echo the comments.

Meanwhile, Bill Shorten didn't miss the opportunity, and said the remarks were ones "Pauline Hanson would have been proud to make".

The Greens joined those calling for Mr Dutton to make an apology while the Refugee Council of Australia labelled the comments incorrect and incoherent.

But cutting through all the back-and-forth, just how accurate are Mr Dutton's comments? Here's what the ABS data has to say on the topic.
