Robert Hughes found guilty of sexually abusing girls in 1980s

Former Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes has been found guilty of nine of 11 charges of sexually assaulting young girls in the 1980s.

A jury delivered its verdict after a trial lasting almost six weeks at Sydney's Downing Centre District Court.

Hughes had pleaded not guilty to 11 charges that he either sexually or indecently assaulted five girls between 1985 and 1990.

The victims were aged between seven and 15 at the time.

The jury has been directed to again retire and deliberate on the remaining charges.

Hughes yelled "I am innocent" after hearing the verdict.

He will be sentenced at a later date.
