WA Senate election results show swing away from major parties

The Greens and the Palmer United Party have emerged as the big winners after Western Australia's Senate election re-run.

On projected results the Greens have picked up a 6.7 per cent swing, which would ensure Scott Ludlam retains his Senate seat.

PUP also looks to have picked up a seat with a popular vote of about 7 per cent.

The projected data from the ABC's election analyst Antony Green showed the Liberals and the ALP had falls of 5.6 and 5 per cent respectively.

The Liberals appear to have secured two seats and Labor one, with the outcome in the sixth seat yet to be determined.

Putting the ADF succession plan under scrutiny

The Australian Defence Force gets a gold star for its appointments today, but it can do better on retaining the skills of its leaders now and in the future.

It's better to do that than give them a farewell dinner and lose them to the corporate world, academia or the golf course.

As it happened: WA Senate election results

Projected results from the West Australian Senate election re-run show the Liberal Party has comfortably retained two seats, and Labor, the Greens and the Palmer United Party (PUP) will each have one seat.

The ABC's election analyst Antony Green said the Liberal Party also appeared on track to win the final seat.

"Our calculated prediction is pointing towards the Liberals winning the third seat," he said.

"The overall balance between the two parties, it looks like it's going to be exactly the same as it was last September," he said.
