Newman sorry over handling of MP pay rise

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has promised to review a 42 per cent MP wage hike after anger from unions, the Opposition and the public.

The Queensland Government has been criticised over the salary rise for state MPs, which comes after broad cuts to public sector job cuts.

The increases would see MPs get an extra $57,000 a year, ministers an extra $90,000, while Mr Newman's pay would rise by $117,000.

Mr Newman, who has faced massive public backlash over the issue, has also apologised for the way the pay rise for state politicians was handled.

Rudd needs policy solutions, not just celebrity appeal

Retail politics 2013: on Wednesday Kevin Rudd tweets: "Note to self: when rushing out the door in the morning, make sure you take care with the razor. It is sharp".

It comes complete with a selfie of the Prime Minister with a piece of bloodied tissue paper stuck to his cheek, a la Norman Gunston.

Harmless stuff, as long as it doesn't intefere too much with governing the country. Oh, I forgot: he's campaigning.

Angry Dreyfus rejects Japan's 'offensive' Sea Shepherd claims

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has angrily rejected Japanese claims that the Australian Government has "outsourced" its anti-whaling campaign to controversial activist group Sea Shepherd.

Mr Dreyfus was speaking as he wrapped up Australia's legal challenge to the whaling program at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

He was highly critical of Japan's previous assertions to the court about Australia's relationship with anti-whaling activists, saying allegations Australia supported violent extremism were "offensive and untrue".

And he told the court Japan's attempts to invoke a scientific justification for its whaling program were "not supported by any proper hypothesis".
