Coalition announces plan for 2,000-capacity tent city on Nauru

The Federal Opposition has announced plans to build a tent city capable of housing 2,000 asylum seekers on the Pacific island of Nauru if it wins office.

Under the five-year plan, announced this morning, the island would also host a village for people granted asylum status.

Asylum seekers caused an estimated $60 million of damage to the detention centre on Nauru during a riot earlier this month.

Meanwhile Defence personnel will help the Immigration Department prepare the site for the Federal Government's expanded detention centre on PNG's Manus Island.

Nathan Tinkler: Admired by some, disliked by many

Nathan Tinkler, the working class bloke who became a billionaire, is the kind of man that most Australians would love to love.

Instead, the coal baron is perhaps one of the least trusted men in corporate Australia. Admired by some, disliked by many.

He can be course and abrasive, and is well known for sending expletive-laden emails and texts to business associates when unhappy.

But, as a Four Corners investigation reveals, what has sullied his reputation the most is that he is a serial debt delinquent.
