Castro avoids death penalty with plea deal

The Ohio man who kidnapped three women and kept them hostage for a decade has agreed to a plea deal which will see him avoid the death penalty and instead be jailed for life.

Ariel Castro had initially pleaded not guilty and was due to face trial in two weeks.

But in a deal reached with prosecutors, the 53-year-old former school bus driver has changed his plea to guilty, sparing the women he kidnapped the trauma of testifying.

US assures Russia that Edward Snowden will not be executed, tortured

The United States has assured Russia it will not seek the death penalty for fugitive intelligence leaker Edward Snowden, in an attempt to convince Moscow to turn him over.

Mr Snowden has been holed up in Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport since June and has applied for temporary asylum in Russia.

He fears torture or execution if sent back to the US, but the US has written to Russia assuring them that will not be the case.
