Castro avoids death penalty with plea deal

The Ohio man who kidnapped three women and kept them hostage for a decade has agreed to a plea deal which will see him avoid the death penalty and instead be jailed for life.

Ariel Castro had initially pleaded not guilty and was due to face trial in two weeks.

But in a deal reached with prosecutors, the 53-year-old former school bus driver has changed his plea to guilty, sparing the women he kidnapped the trauma of testifying.
