Defence sets up office to help victims of abuse

Defence has launched what it describes as a "fundamental change" in the way it handles sexual misconduct, with a new body to allow the reporting of incidents outside of the chain of command.

The Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response Office (SeMPRO) will allow victims to report incidents confidentially.

It will be staffed by military personnel and public servants and will also coordinate responses and victim support and education.

Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick has welcomed the move, saying it is one of the most significant recommendations she made in her recent review.

On the positive side, thousands more may find refuge

Kevin Rudd will not reduce the number of people willing to risk their lives for a better life. They will just risk their lives elsewhere, safely away from our guilt-ridden politicians.

But the Federal Government is looking at increasing the total refugee intake from 20,000 a year to 27,000 a year. The intake was just 13,000 a few years ago.

For all that has been said about the Papua New Guinea deal, that increase would be a very good thing. Seven thousand more people safe and free in a rich developed country.
