New prince makes first public appearance

Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge have made their first public appearance with their newborn son - the third in line to the British throne.

A relaxed and happy looking William and Catherine emerged on the steps of St Mary's Hospital in London to show off the baby, one day after his birth.

As crowds cheered, the royal couple told journalists they were still working on a name for the young Prince of Cambridge.

Prince William joked that it was fortunate his new son had more hair than him.

He then loaded the young prince into a baby capsule before the family drove off for Kensington Palace.

Spend your $2.49 wisely this election

Australia's preferential voting system can make you feel like your vote is irrelevant (just ask Greens voters). After all, you have to preference the ALP or LNP at some point.

So is it all pointless? Is our vote just stuck in the two-party system, powerless and taken for granted?

Not entirely. Not only can your first preference have an impact in an electoral sense, but it also hits the bottom lines of the major parties when you put someone else as Number 1.

Rate cut possible on forecast soft inflation

Economists expect today's inflation figures will provide enough room for the Reserve Bank to cut interest rates next month.

The June quarter figures are expected to show prices fell for most household items, with fruit and vegetables among the few items to have become more expensive.

The consumer price index is forecast to rise by 0.5 per cent in the quarter, up from 0.4 per cent in the first three months of the year, putting the annual rate at 2.5 per cent.

Whistleblower claims Manus Island detainees raped, abused

A whistleblower who worked at the Manus Island immigration detention centre in PNG claims detainees have been raped and abused with the full knowledge of staff.

Former senior security manager Rod St George told SBS's Dateline program of repeated instances of sexual abuse between asylum seekers in the single male compound.

He says victims are knowingly left in the same compound as their abusers, and says attempted suicides and self-harm are now an "almost daily" occurrence.

The Immigration Department says there have been no reported allegations of rape, and one detainee who alleged he had been sexually assaulted chose not to press charges.
