At least 35 dead in Spanish train crash

At least 35 people died and 200 more were injured when a train derailed in Galicia in north-west Spain this morning.

"The number of dead will not be lower than 35," the president of the regional government, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, told local radio.

A woman who was close to the site of the accident told the radio station that she heard a loud explosion and then watched the train come off the rails.

A reporter on the scene for the Cadena Ser radio station said the site was strewn with bodies covered with blankets.

The mysterious popularity of Rudd Redux

We seem to be watching a great national forgetting, in which everything that happened over the past three years, all its plots, gender-positionings and quaint hand-crafted kangaroos, has been swept under the rug.

Will it be Tony Abbott's tragedy that he was a political character formed in that period, that term of bitterly contested minority government and the protracted backroom power play of two party organisations waging war?

The Opposition says Peter O'Neill has told them he is now in control of the aid money coming from his country to Australia.

But Mr O'Neill has accused the Opposition of misrepresenting a private briefing he gave them last week about the deal for political gain.

Butler flies into Tarkine electoral and mining battleground

New Environment Minister Mark Butler is visiting Tasmania's north-west, which is shaping up as a key electoral battleground amid an ongoing debate over mining in the area.

Work on a $20 million iron ore mine proposal by Shree Minerals was halted by a Federal Court decision last week because the impact on the Tasmanian Devil was not properly considered.

Mark Butler is meeting interested parties in Burnie today and expects to make a decision on the mine's future by the end of the week.
